Purpose: The purpose of this work was to select a recent international controversy involving a globally operating organization. Multiple viewpoints were used to examine a controversy Facebook was navigating, including organizational operations, leadership and supervisor behaviors, the social structures/systems of international societies involved, stakeholders impact, and the organizational challenges that emerged. Through examination, this study demonstrated how Facebook’s challenge impacted global, economic and political systems.
Why I Selected This Artifact: This artifact comes from OL 634 and aligns with program learning outcome number one, interpreting the contexts and environments in which organizations operate. I was able to identify and analyze how a leader’s unethical approach towards decision-making processes impacted internal and external environments. While various cultures display differing viewpoints on systemic norms, trust was broken with people from all backgrounds when they discovered Facebook was sharing user data with a third-party organization to create and implement political advertising activities.
Program Learning Outcome and Course Objective: The artifact shared meets the course objective and program learning outcomes by demonstrating the impact ethical decision-making has as leaders navigate change and growth. While power and strong economic stature can influence the decision-making process, a leader must continuously promote organizational integrity and civic engagement to sustain trust across internal and external communities. Through analysis, leaders must learn how cultural environments shape behaviors and views, impacting organizational performance.
